Negotiating often is one of the most stressful components of a home transaction, with a single point of contention having the potential to collapse the deal. With that in mind, real estate search website Homes.org polled Realtors on their negotiation tips. The responses confirmed time-honored advice, such as keeping emotions in check, and also offered lesser-known and industry-specific tips. Home buyers are encouraged to use an agent, know what and when to negotiate, understand current market values, and know as much about the seller as possible. Additionally, real estate professionals participating in the survey stressed the importance of persuading with facts. “When trying to negotiate a lower price,” for example, says author and property lawyer Adam Leitman Bailey, “demonstrate why it should be lower by showing how much it would cost to improve or repair the property.
